Garmin + GPS route planning issues

I'm not really one to depend on navigation apps, like I only use Google Maps for emergencies. However, lately, I've really been getting into planning more detailed, custom routes to truly enjoy the ride, seeking out those twisty back roads and scenic detours. The problem is when I upload them to my Garmin unit, the system seems to just revert to freeway or direct routes. This basically destroys the custom route I spent so much time creating, bypassing all the fun roads I wanted to explore. Has anyone else with a 2023 Gold Wing experienced this? Is there a known workaround for getting these custom routes to stick without being recalculated into a boring direct path? Or is there alternative map software or a specific method I should be using that preserves the integrity of the custom route when uploaded?

Maybe you can try setting the navigation mode on your Garmin to Off-Road or Motorcycle if available. Double check that avoidances like highways or toll roads are selected correctly too. You might also have better luck using different apps instead to plan routes before uploading.

I've tried GPX files through basecamp and even manually shaping points, but I figured unless every point is marked as a waypoint or hard stop, it still tries to outsmart you, sometimes I wonder why they even allow custom routing if it's just going to bulldoze it

If you need turn-by-turn, use tons of shaping points and set your garmin to no recalculation, it'll help stop it from tossing you on the freeway

Are you exporting the routes as GPX files with waypoints or just the final destination? Sometimes using tracks instead of routes helps preserve the path better from what I know. Also, are you planning your routes with BaseCamp, or a different tool like MyRoute-app?

Try exporting as a track instead of a route and disable recalculation on the Garmin. Just a quick review... MyRoute-app with lots of shaping points has worked way better for me than BaseCamp.
